Done Having Children? Why You Still Need Your Gynecologist

If you're done having children, you might think you're done with the gynecologist. That's not the case. You've grown your family as far as you want, but you still need to visit the gynecologist from time to time. Read the information provided here. You'll find four reasons to keep seeing your gynecologist.

Annual Screenings

If you haven't visited the gynecologist in a while, you're missing out on important health screenings. Your gynecologist uses screenings to track your health. Gynecological screenings include pap smears, HPV screenings, and breast exams.

But, the annual screening also includes a pelvic exam. This exam checks for changes in your vulva, vagina, and uterus. Depending on your age, your gynecologist will also order a mammogram for you.

Abnormal Bleeding

If you've been experiencing some abnormal bleeding, it's time to visit the gynecologist. Abnormal bleeding can be a sign of changes within your body. That's why you should always talk to your gynecologist about changes in the severity of bleeding. Two changes include heavier or lighter bleeding than normal. You should also see your gynecologist if you start passing blood clots during your period.

Birth Control Needs

If you've decided to stop having children, it's time to talk to your gynecologist about your birth control plans. It might be time to make some changes. Daily contraceptives are a good choice when you want to take breaks for pregnancies.

But, if you're done with pregnancies, there are other types of birth control methods to consider. Long-acting reversible contraceptives can last up to 10 years. These methods include IUDs and hormonal implants. Your gynecologist can help you choose the birth control measure that's right for you.

Menopausal Changes

If you've noticed some changes associated with menopause, visit your gynecologist. For most women, menopause will start around the age of 45. But, some women notice changes as early as 40 years of age. Two symptoms of menopause to watch for include hot flashes, and vaginal changes.

You may also notice changes in your menstrual cycle. Those changes could include missed periods or blood flow that's lighter than usual. If you notice any of these changes, schedule an appointment with your gynecologist.

Don't take chances with your health. If you missed your last gynecological check-up, you could be putting your health at risk. Now's the time to visit your gynecologist. Your gynecologist is an important part of your healthcare team, even after you're done with pregnancies. For more information, contact a gynecologist near you.
